Artists are awarded for their talent and depth of artistic comprehension in painting, graphic arts, sculpture, decorative and monumental arts.
Mikhail Vrubel, at theurgent request of his father, tried to study at the law faculty, but could not defend his diploma and received a lower degree - a real student. But the inner passion - obsession with drawing - took its toll. He became interested in illustration, met with students of art institutions and soon entered the Academy of Arts. Vrubel was tought by Pavel Chistyakov and watercolourists - by Ilya Repin, who was inspired with icon painting and restoration. Vrubel was deeply interested in the history of art, Byzantine painting and medieval stained glass windows. He worked with Aivazovsky, Shishkin and Repin on illustrating the works of Lermontov. The topic of “Demon” caught the artist’s subtle soul. Vrubel passionately sought for the edges of the other worlds and tried to realize and convey  essence of an earthly and mythical image, spiritual and human at the same time. He formed his own painting style - a filigree mosaic with complex coloristic solutions. He received a gold medal at the World Exhibition in Paris for a tiled fireplace. And he returned to the tragic topic “The Demon” with a painful attempt to capture the depth and to convey the incomprehensible, unreal and intangible, like music to a brush and paint on canvas, to describe the range of emotions, feelings and personal experience vie a wonderful symphony.
